Polarization Rotators
Displaytech
Displaytech makes Polarization Rotators in a variety of aperture sizes and housing types. Our Polarization Rotators are highly reliable, have <100 microseconds one state transition time, 85% transmission, and a high contrast ratio.

The Polarization Rotator is the basis of all Displaytech Photonics products. Rotators are used to quickly and accurately modulate the polarization state of an incoming light beam. Our devices are electro-optical so they elicit an optical response with an electrical input. Polarization Rotators, used in research and product development, are suited for optical switching, polarimetry, and image enhancement (microscopy).

The rotator works as an electrically switchable half-wave plate. This electro-optic component converts one state of optical polarization into the orthogonal states (rotates linearly polarized light 90°). The cell is activated by applying 5V dc across the wire leads. Reversing the polarity controls the state of the cell.
The Polarization Rotators are centered for operation in the visible spectrum. Rotators are available in two wavelength options:
  • a set centered wavelength of 510 nm
  • customized wavelengths ranging from 400 nm - 1550 nm
The centerline is 510 nm (this corresponds to a retardance of 255 nm). The device yields an exact halfwave response in green (510nm), slightly more than halfwave in blue (450nm), and less than a halfwave in red (650nm).Polarization Rotators are offered in three aperture sizes in two types of housings:
  • 13mm - circular housing
  • 25mm - circular or square housing
  • 45mm - circular housing

Shutters
Displaytech
Displaytech Shutters are used to modulate the transmitted light intensity. Their devices are based on Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) technology. Displaytech Shutters blend the speed of electronic shutters and the vibration free operation of standard liquid crystal shutters. The FLC shutter offers exposure times of 1/5,000 of a second while standard liquid crystal shutters may offer exposure times of only 1/100 of a second.

Shutters are used in applications where light must be rapidly switched on/off or where the polarization state of light needs to be switched. They are suited for laser chopping, stereo vision, image capture (freeze-frame), and machine vision. Shutters are used: as switchable color filters to generate color images using high resolution black and white image sensors; for movie conversion from film to digital format; scientific instruments such as microscopes and astronomical telescopes.

Displaytech Shutters are based on electrically switchable FLC halfwave plates. By sandwiching an FLC cell between crossed linear polarizers, the device acts as an intensity modulator. Switching speeds are above 7 kHz offering precise, vibration free operation. Shutter control is achieved when 5-volts is applied across its lead holding it in one state. To change states, the polarity is reversed. Our shutters can achieve a modulation depth of 30 db (or 1000:1 contrast ratio).

Standard shutters are offered in three aperture sizes and two housing options:
  • 13mm - circular housing
  • 25mm - circular or square housing
  • 45mm - circular housing

Video Shutters
Displaytech
Displaytech video shutters are similar in design toe standard OEM shutters, but are optimized for use with CCD cameras. Use these video shutters in applications requiring fast exposure times, minimal blur, high resolution and vibration-free operation. Accurate exposure times of less than 1/5000th of a second can be obtained.
